My Sewing Room

Although my new sewing room is somewhat larger than my old sewing room in our previous home, I really lost out in the storage area.

IMG_1816

My old closet was wall to wall… 11 feet long!!

IMG_1813

This one is not even 5 feet long…sigh…

So, I had to acquire lots of fabric storage furniture.

IMG_1814

I bought the white Expedit cubby unit at Ikea and use 4 aqua cloth baskets in it.

And I then also bought the double white dresser at Ikea, too. (My design wall will go on the wall above this dresser.)

IMG_1821

I also am using my pie safe, that used to hold quilts in our family room at the old house, in my sewing room for fabric storage, both inside and on the top in the cubby piece that holds all my fat quarters. I also mounted my thread racks on the side, too!!

The low white rolling shelf unit that my big ironing board sits on is also from Ikea!

IMG_1814

I’m thinking I might buy the vanishing roll up design wall and mount it over the top of my little closet for more design wall space…

Any of you have this exact one? http://www.vanishingdesignwall.com/

I worry that the blocks will fall off as the pull down surface hangs free…  thoughts?

IMG_1847

I decided in order to avoid making more holes in the wall to hang different sized quits above the mantle, I’ll make new quilts the exact size of the poppy one so it will be easy to change out!

I’m working on an autumn tree wall quilt to put up there now!!

What are you working on??

  2. I have not used the roll down design wall, but I am currently using a piece of flannel on a rod above my closet. It is horrible. Because of the natural waves in the material as it hangs and the lack of a solid surface behind half of it...my blocks all fall off. I will be switching to a solid design wall shortly

  3. Your room looks lovely! I like how you are using your vertical space so well. I am such a fan of IKEA... trying to figure out where I can work in another Expedit unit in my room as I love the versatile storage options.

  4. Hi Polly, I have the vanishing design wall and love it. The blocks stay put for one day or one month.

  5. The vanishing design wall is so clever and I had never seen it before. Now I will have to check it out. Thanks for the idea.

Love the poppy wall quilt and the fall one is shaping up beautifully.

  8. I just put up my vanishing design wall and am LOVING it! So handy. Just ran a lint roller over it when I got done with that quilt. I love having the shelf area too!

  9. Be careful of your threads in the light of that window. I have had some of my dark ones bleach out from sunlight. Mine are in a cabinet laying on their sides with the ends showing and there are some that I have to guess what the real color is. Damage happened at our previous house so not such a problem now. They don't seem to have lost strength, just color. Navy was the worst.

  11. It all looks wonderful and maybe having everything out where you see it will make it easier. I did wonder if Yogi is happy? can he see out that window? Of course, that's where my mind went, LOL.

  12. Hello, your new home is beautiful! I have had the disappearing design wall about 4 years now and have never had problems with things falling off. In fact it works just as well today as when I first got it, love that thing. It looks like yogi is all settled in to the new sewing space, such a cutie.

  16. I have never heard about that vanishing design wall. I have a roller shade mounted on my ceiling that I attached flannel to. The blocks stay on very well on that so I bet the other would work too. Love all the new IKEA stuff. Wish I had one near me. sigh

  17. I use the adhesive part of the command strips to hang my wall quilts. The strips work great and no wall holes.

I'm still making applesauce, apple chips, apple pies, apple jelly, caramel apple jam....and I still have bushels and bushels of apples!

  20. I envy your fantastic organizational skills! I'm sharing my sewing space with a treadmill!
I'm making your counting fives quilt from the moda bakeshop recipes using a honeybun - it's a great pattern, thank you. I'm also westie-sitting. Now I have 2 of them on my bed (my husband has given up and is on the sofa).

  22. Thanks for sharing the pictures of your sewing space. I love to look at other people's spaces and get ideas for my own. We recently moved and are working on a space for me in our basement. We sectioned off an end by adding a wall and closet, now I need to paint and then hubby will do the finishing work. I am so anxious for it to be finished. My closet will only be 5 feet wide so I'm trying to decide on shelving to make to the best use of the space. I'm leaning toward the Elfa system from the Container store. I too, was wondering about the birds on the line. Are they vinyl decals? Thanks again for sharing!
