On A Roll! Woo Hoo!

Yesterday, I quilted my blue strip twist top that’s been sitting in my sewing room for 6 months.  It’s ready for me to hand-sew down the binding at bee on Saturday.  Today after work, I quilted my original “Counting By Fives” design quilt made with a Mary Engelbreit “Attitude Girls” honey bun.

I designed and made the top in August, but it’s been waiting patiently for me to quilt it.  I have lots of patient fabrics, too!! LOL!!

So, now I have 2 quilts to bind at bee!  YAY!!  I love to bind quilts, but I admit, it was not always pleasurable to me.  I used to hate it… not sure why it changed, but I am glad it did!!

My least favorite part of making a quilt is cutting it out.  My favorite part… well, that’s a tough one.  I love selecting and auditioning fabrics, piecing the blocks, free-motion quilting, and hand-sewing the binding down.  What’s your favorite part and least favorite part of quilting?

  1. Hi! I just found your blog a couple of weeks ago and am enjoying it! Nice-looking quilt Polly, and enjoy your binding! I love to hand stitch my bindings, but have troubles sitting down to machine stitch the bindings to the quilts to start....my favorite part of quilting is hand quilting, but I'd love to learn how to machine quilt. My domestic machine is too small for good quilting and I just don't have the knack....Do you like your HQ16? I've been thinking of getting a long-arm, but dh says I have to quilt for others too, not just my own quilts. Any suggestions on how to handle this? I'm not a doodler, so feel the need to just do pantos.

  2. That quilt is so great. I love how you framed the blocks in something other than just white. I love cutting out fabric. LOL! It is funny how we all have a different favorite part. I love your new back ground.

  3. I like this "Counting by Fives" quilt, too, Polly. ME has such happy fabrics! I'm with you...my least favorite job of any sewing project is cutting the fabrics! But I really love hand-sewing on binding. I find it comforting and a great stress-reliever. I also enjoy the challenge of piecing new and different blocks.

    XOXO,

    Cyndi

  4. Love your quilts on the last 2 blog posts. I think I like to piece the best. I'm not very proficient with free motion quilting ..... yet, so I get all tied up in knots when I'm about to start quilting. The nervous jitters do seem to be getting a little better as I get more practice. And I do like binding, but I wish I could get those mitered corners to turn out a little better. LOL.... always room for improvement for me!

  5. Gorgeous fabrics in your quilt. You will have enough to do at the be now.

My favorite part of quilting is choosing the fabrics. Least favorite is the binding that is why I machine stitch most of my quilts.

    enjoy your bee.

  6. The looks awesome - I love it. My favorate part is hand stitch the binding - I love to get comfy under the quilt and for me personal I think it looks much better. I also love to pick the fabric for a new project.

  7. I don't enjoy cutting fabric one single bit. Nothing about it at all. Like you, I'm not sure I can tell you my favorite part. It very well might be hand sewing down the binding because it's a sign that I so close to the finish line.

  8. you give me hope--I REALLY DISLIKE binding-REALLY. Perhaps that will change in me too someday. I pretty much love every other part of making a quilt.
Love the fabrics in you Count by Five's quilt

  9. Too bad we don't live near each other. One of my favorite things is cutting fabric:) I love piecing the components, hand-sewing binding, selecting fabrics. My least favorite thing is measuring, cutting, and sewing borders:)

I met a new quilter at guild this week. She won a honey bun from the brown-bag raffle. I recommended your Counting By Fives project for her new winnings. She was quite excited:)

  10. My least favorite part is picking fabrics. I agonize about it. Maybe that is why I love scrappy quilts.

  11. I love this! Would you mind if I copied the design to create a quilt for a friend of mine? I was trying to determine how to use those "Make Life" text fabrics but I couldn't think of anyhting other than a standard border and sashing and I didn't like what I kept envisioning. Yours, however, I love it.

  12. My favorite is piecing it and watching it come together. I cut as I go. I never cut it all out in the beginning; so I never mind cutting.

I don't like quilting it. I have a shoulder/arm problem that makes it even worse. Someday a long arm may help in that area.

  13. Cute quilt Polly. I'm glad you got some sewing mojo in this week. My least favorite part...hmm I think is the cutting also. I love to piece!

  14. Your quilt is beautiful! I really like the fabric with words to set off the colors.

When I start a new quilt, I love the cutting part. Then I love piecing it together, then I love the way it feels when it goes from three separate layers to one unit during the quilting. Then I love the binding part. Each step along the way is fun in it's own way.

  16. I am fairly new to your blog but enjoy it. I am a fairly new quilter and most of my quilts are just crazy quilts, I guess. Although I did a Sue Bonnet Quilt. I hand quilt. I don't have a big enough machine to machine quilt.

I enjoy seeing it come together. It is relaxing to sit and quilt. I usually sew the binding on the machine and make a blind stitch to finish it off.

  17. My least favorite - deciding on the fabrics. I just don't feel like I'm good at it. Favorite for me might be the binding. I enjoy the binding a lot! blessings, marlene

  18. Love your quilt...cute as it can be. I think binding is my least favorite part...but you've given me hope...maybe I'll start liking it one of these days soon.

  20. I love doing the handwork of the binding! When you finish it is that gratification of knowing it is done done done! I don't like making the binding and sewing it on. Sometimes wrestling that alligator to get it sewn on is a royal pain! LOL

  23. Look at you go girl! Such pretty quilts - and quilting, too! Go Polly, go Polly!

  24. Patient fabrics....how funny!!! :-)

My least favorite part are borders and layering. I just don't have a great surface to layer in my house, so I usually go to my mom's house, and I just hate crawling around on her kitchen floor to pin a quilt!!!

I'm with you on hand sewing binding. I used to not enjoy it much, and now I savor it. Something about being so close to a finish I suppose. That, and a decent excuse to sit still in front of food network for a few hours!!!

Love your quilting machine. Bet you have a ball with it!

  25. I really like this quilt. I pulled out a Glace honey bun that I picked up a while back and put together all the "blocks". Had to order the sashing and picked a print to follow your idea. Hope mine is as cute as yours.

  26. How'd I miss this post? LOL

Here I've been missing you and I find TWO posts this morning. Talking about being SLOW - that'd be ME for sure !!

I am working on a small quilt - FINALLY. I feel like my sewing world has been really lacking recently as well as my blogging.

    Please know you're thought of regularly - you're such a blogging friend - don't want to lose contact....even if I AM slow...LOL

Today, for me - dentist down in Phoenix so I'm gone for "yet another" day.
